First I am a newbie but I love the fact that Mint plays my digital media 'out of the box' with next to no set-up. I have tried many of the Linux systems out there (Suse, Mempis, Ubuntu to name a few) and this is the only one so far to do this!!!! Anyway when I change between programs like having Firefox open and then opening terminal I get the low frame rate screen flicker. How do I find out if the card is installed correctly and 3d is working? Remember I am a newbie so I don't know even at this point hardly how to install a driver or anything. Your frame rate should not change depending on what you do (games and such excluded) If your desktop generally feels sluggish you may have the wrong driver, even the vesa driver.
In Nautilus go to /etc/X11 and open xorg.conf. Check the section 'Device' and the driver you see there. I have nVidia so I'm not quite sure but you should have 'ATI' I believe. If so you may have to reconfigure X sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg If that does not help or you have some 'not ATI' driver its time to install the driver sudo envy -g (if you've got the latest version of envy -g for 'gnome' -t for 'terminal') Just follow the instructions. To be sure select uninstall before install. I seem to remember that install automaticly uninstalls the old version, but I can't verify that.
Ati radeon 9600 pro for linux I actually installed for the first time Linux(Redhat 9-Shrike) so I don't really know my way around. Though I installed pretty easy the network card driver I'm unable to install the drivers for my ati radeon 9600 pro(the machine is Inspiron 8600).
To install the ATI Proprietary Linux driver using the Automatic option, follow these steps: 1 Launch the Terminal Application/Window and navigate to the ATI Proprietary Linux driver download. 2 Enter the command sh./ati-driver-installer-8.573-x86.x8664 to launch the ATI Proprietary Linux driver installer. The ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Setup dialog box is displayed 3 Select Install Driver and click Continue.
Ati Radeon Drivers
The ATI License Agreement will be displayed. I can't get past step 2.
The driver installer file I downloaded with the instructions is actually called 'ati-driver-installer-9-1-x86.x8664' so when it did'nt work with the command they say, I tried it with the one I downloaded. Still nothing. I can't believe what a pain it is just doing a simple thing like install a program/driver etc. I want to use linux in one form or another but am seriously thinkig about going back to Windows. For how long linux has been around and the hundreds of thousands of people that have worked on it surely they can come up with a better way by now. Windows for example, click on the setup icon, agree with the license agreement, install the program. Why can't all the clever programmers who work on Linux come up with something similar.
